Pocket Survival Kit Contest Entry #3

The next entry is from Edwood, who you may remember was the winner of our Zombie Photo Contest back in October!

I have been carrying a small pocket kit like this one since my time in the army. The fact that I work in some very dangerous places and we work in small teams means that the possibility of getting separated from the team is a real possibility.

My kits contents have changed over the years because of my experience and needs that I have had out in the field and by what I have learned from others. Escape and evasion is a big part of purpose of this kit.

I wrap my tin with some electrical tape, and keep my knife, and Swiss Card on the outside since these get used the most. The Go Tube is packed with an emergency copy containing my documentation and money should I need to identify myself or buy my way out of trouble. I usually hide my go tube, together with other essentials in a fall back spot I pre-select when in in a place I might need to go in to escape an evasion mode.

From A.W.: Edwood has an great overall kit, and it's well designed for his work as an LEO operating in Mexico. His kit is geared more towards urban survival and EDC than a typical wilderness survival tin, and I know Ed carries this kit on a regular basis while on-the-job. A few things to think about:
  • I think the silver bars probably make more sense in Mexico than they would in the U.S.--I would guess there's much more of a barter economy going on south of the border. Gold would get you more value/weight--gold coins have been common E&E gear for decades, probably centuries. There is, of course, the added cost.
  • Consider looking at a backup pre-paid SIM card in case your normal network goes down.
  • Duct tape! Can solve wonders; along with the super glue, you can solve a lot of problems. If you're tight on room, I would loose the bandaids--between duct tape and super glue, you should be able to patch up small injuries sufficiently.
  • Cordage can have plenty of uses, even in an urban environment. Look at adding some - bank line, dacron line, and Kevlar cordage are all PSK-sized options.
